How Promoting Others Reflects Back on You

Megan, blogging at Flaming Renaissance is promoting the Friday Felicitations Movement, saying

"Why is it we are so ready to remember those negative things we hear about ourselves and so quick to dismiss the compliments and offers of a step up in this world?  . . .

. . . It’s time to help each other throw out all that negative thinking and acknowledge those things we have to celebrate. Friday is now the day to blog your compliments, your accomplishments, something nice someone said to you, or maybe even something you are stiving to make better."

Selfless promotion of someone else always struck me as reflecting just as much on the blogger as on the writer they're praising. So my Friday Felicitations go out to Flaming Renaissance for coming up with this way to shine a positive light on things in general.

This idea reminds me of Blogtipping, Easton Elsworth's brainchild from KnowMoreMedia.

On Blogtipping day - the first of every month - participants pick three blogs they want to "tip", then write three complements about the blog and add a tip - something they'd like the blogger to add or something helpful to the blogger.

What One Thing Did You Learn Today?

Shannon is trying to learn something new everyday. What a fun idea and an interesting thing to document. I wonder if I have the discipline to document what I learn?

Planetshannon is where Shannon documents what she learns and on Thursday March 22/07 she learned that:

It apparently takes 20 minutes to recover from any interruption from what you are doing, even if the issue is resolved

Interesting! I learned something new too.  I felt that it takes me a long time to get back on track when I get distracted. Now I know I'm not quite so weird nor unusual.

So . . . What did you learn today? Do you have the discipline to record what you learn?

Could you do it for a week? A month? Longer?

What Rubs Off As You Walk By?

Especially meaningful after my latest funk perhaps, I took note that Stephanie Diamond of The Marketing Message Blog is talking about a NY Times article: Sunny or Cloudy, Moods Cast an Influence by Phyllis Korkki. 

Korkki points out that being influential can be a bad thing . . . if you're feeling negative it can rub off.  This puts a new spin on influential.

"It's not your imagination. When you're in a bad mood or a good one, you influence those around you. Ms. Korkki notes, "in groups, people unconsciously tend to mimic the demeanor of those around them."

Influential indeed. What I'd thought of as a good term can be a bad one as well. Not that I consider myself especially influential but I swear I'm trying my best to put on my most positive face!

A somewhat related blog entry Does Monkey See, Monkey Do, Describe You?.presents another take in it.

"Does Monkey See, Monkey Do, Describe You? . . . Well...it depends. Researchers recently learned that we resonate more with actions we can already perform. . ."

Thought provoking stuff.

And to make sure you're not rubbing off the wrong way on some monkey or another you may want to check out the Kind Blog Movement. I've put my badge up and vow to be on my best - and kindest - behavior.

Apparently it's not just for babies, puppies and kittens anymore. Who knew about the Fine Art Adoption Network?

And what do you think?

a.) A good idea for getting art in the hands of collectors? or

b.) A way to take advantage of artists desperate for an audience?

What obligations do the adoptive "parent" or the artist giving up the work to be adopted take on if any?

Staying in Touch - Travel Blogging Challenges

I  always forget something when I'm on the road and not to be inconsistent, yesterday I arrived in North Carolina without the camera,

In my messenger bag is a week's supply of Rx's, my PDA, Philip Roth's book the Human Stain, a knitting project and even extra shoes! But the camera built into the cel phone will have to do for quick pictures, like giving you a peek at the art survival kit I brought along.

The kit details are probably less important than communicating with friends and blog readers - and photos seem like a good way to do that when you're on the go and short for either time or words.

I'm interested in finding out what other folks do to stay in touch with the blogosphere while on the road, either as a reader or writer.
