Progress or What Passes for It

Yesterday was big. I left the house.

  • My daughter drove me to Alexandria.
  • I showed Doctor Chang my base-boob (the beginning reconstruction of the breast removed)
  • I met twitter's @geosteph who gave me a gorgeous silver necklace that her sister MADE.
  • I had lunch in a restaurant.
  • I answered questions from a reporter.
  • I said I'd be a special guest at Seacoast Concert For A Cure this summerNecklacesm
  • I was exhausted.

Stop giggling.

At dinner tonight the soon to be son-in-law said that he told his mom that I was having dinner with them "which was a good sign".

Apparently I've not been getting out.  Hey I was just out yesterday. I then pass around the necklace from Steph to prove it.

Growlove

Spouse and daughter 3 in a kind way pretty much indicate that I've been holed up and other than visiting doctors, I'm not being seen outside the house.

What, you mean I haven't gone out to dinner since surgery? I can't believe that. I live to go to dinner.

But apparently it's true.

Then I realize it's been exactly two weeks since surgery. On Sunday it will be a month since I discovered that one breast was not quite like the other.

Maybe the holed up part is a little bit true.

I might make a breast cancer ribbon wreath tomorrow. If I don't sleep all day.

Susan, you are doing great!! You are beautiful & taking life with a grand sense of humor that heals all ails!! Many are thinking of you now and you have created an educated audience.. All brilliant things.. If it requires rest now and then, and a bit of holing up for a few weeks, so be it! Be gentle to YOU! :D

(((HUGS)))

That's what I was thinking: two weeks since you had the post-surgery sandwich. Pace yourself like a marathoner. Hugs.

The ONLY expectations you have to meet, are your own. If you needed some alone time, so what? You're doing much better than I would, under the circumstances. You ROCK!

just wanted to reiterate tndaisy's comment above! You are amazing and your body and mind are doing what they need to do to heal! A bright light to all of us who follow you, you do indeed ROCK!!!!!!

About My Cancer

  • Invasive Lobular Carcinoma
My form of breast cancer is less common than others. In fact only about 6 to 8% of cases of breast cancer are the invasive form that is based in the lobules, not in the milk ducts.

Invasive, sometimes called Infiltrating, is a scary word. In most cases this form of breast cancer has been present for 8–10 years when detected by a mammogram or physical exam.

In my case there was clearly an area that felt thickened or dense on December 6, 2007. A mammogram the next afternoon was not able to detect it but it clearly appeared on ultrasound and was confirmed by multiple biopsies the same day.

During those 8 to 10 years the cancer took to become apparent to me, there has been plenty of opportunity for those invasive cells to get out of the breast and spread to the rest of the body.

It is after all, by definition, an invasive form of cancer.

Each year about 190 thousand women are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the US and about 40 thousand women will die of the disease. The larger the mass is when discovered the more risk. Mine had tentacled almost 5cm into the surrounding tissue and two other areas in the breast were discovered as well.

My chances of living another 10 years without cancer in another area are about 40%. The likelihood of one of my other underlying health conditions doing the job before that is 20%. it took a few months to get used to that idea.

Now though my attitude is that at least I know what I'm facing. It's just not what I expected. Life changes in an instant.
